Once upon a time a foot-weary traveler, carry only an empty pot, ventured into a village. Asking for some food, the traveler found the villagers unwilling to share any of their provisions. The traveler filled the pot with water, dropped a large stone into it, and placed the pot over a fire in the village square. A curious villager asked what the traveler was doing. "Making stone soup, a tasty dish if only I had an onion." The villager didn't mind parting with an onion, which got added to the pot. Another villager walked by, peered into the pot, and the traveler again said the soup was nearing its full potential but needed a carrot or two. The villager gladly gave a few carrots to see how the soup would turn out. Each time another villager passed a new ingredient was added. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup was enjoyed by all.
